Meet the Mushers

  • Suzie Harris

    KENNEL OWNER

I came to the Keweenaw in 2017 as a student at Michigan Tech. During my time studying Mechanical Engineering, I fell in love with the land, local recreation within nature, and community. After spending years here working with sled dogs and client’s pets, I knew this was my home to stay.

  • Sky Harris

    KENNEL OWNER

I often visited my sibling Suzie while they were attending Michigan Tech. We explored the Keweenaw together; I helped care for sled dogs at local kennels, went skiiing, yooperlite hunting, and more. I eventually moved to the UP and we started a kennel together. Now I get to explore the UP by sled.

    MUSHER/HANDLER

I moved to Houghton in 2023 to attend Michigan Technological University. While attending classes, I was missing the adventure of spending time in nature on horseback. So I traded my saddle for a sled and found new excitement through Variety Pack Kennel.

Where it all began…

My sister Sky and I have always loved animals and grew up caring for various ones. While dogs were a favorite of ours that we always wanted, our dad has severe allergies so getting one was out of the question. We were fascinated with mushing growing up, but this was a dream we never thought to be a reality. That is until I came to the Keweenaw and got the opportunity to work with a kennel through the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech in the fall of 2019. After experiencing the thrill of mushing and developing deep bonds with the sled dogs, I realized not only is this my passion but I want to share this feeling with others. Sky often accompanied me to the kennel during her visits, helping me care for the dogs and eager to learn as well. After a medical incident, she moved up here with me and mushing became a major part of her recovery process. Wolfie then became part of our lives as an athletic canine partner and a Service Dog in Training for Sky. She was excelling in her training, but as she progressed so did Sky’s recovery. Eventually our goals transitioned, leading to an increased focus on animal care and training, with our own pets as well as client’s.

Where we are now

After working with various mushing kennels and gaining supportive mentors, we achieved the knowledge and confidence to begin our own micro kennel in the fall of 2024. Sky has always been by my side helping me as I did during her recovery. Last season was a lot of firsts for us and I am beyond thankful for everyone who has helped us get to this point. Through borrowing dogs for the mushing season, being lent equipment, and taking on extra work hours and clients, what was once a dream of mine is now becoming a reality before my eyes. I am fortunate to be surrounded by family and friends that have supported this crazy passion. While everything has been coming together fairly smoothly, we could benefit from additional support. This also makes it easier for us to support others in pursuing this sport in any way that we can, including the Michigan Tech students that work with us. Sponsorships are one way to help us achieve our goals. They benefit the dogs in addition to covering investments in equipment and funds to attend more dog sport events plus provide educational experiences. Thanks for supporting our dream!
